Acne is proof of the adage that life is unfair. Nine out of ten teenagers spend several years dealing with painful, disfiguring acne bumps. And one out of five adults between the ages of 20 and 45 still has to deal with acne on a regular basis.
The cleansers needed for adult acne treatments differ significantly from the cleansers that work well for teens. Benzoyl peroxide, particularly when combined with foaming agents, is an effective treatment for acne in supple, flexible teenaged skin.

- Adults, however, need gentler skin cleansers. For adult acne treatment, skin cleansers must:
- Absorb excess oil, and
- Gently lift dead skin for exfoliation, but
- Leave healthy skin intact.

Cleansers for moderate to severe adult acne have to reach down into pores and loosen excess sebum. Foaming benzoyl peroxide is OK for oily acne-affected skin, but adults who have dry skin and acne may need gentle soap-and-water treatment. The least expensive soap for dry skin affected by acne is Dove, but avoid Ivory soap if you have dry skin. Other useful cleansers for adult acne include:
- Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash
- Johnson & Johnson Clean and Clear
- Fostex Acne Cleansing Bar
- Aveeno Cleansing Bar for Acne

Another way adult acne treatment differs from acne treatment for teens is the use of toners. Most teens don’t need toners. Most adults do. Toners extract residual oils and residues from the skin and leave the skin feeling fresh and clean all day long. Apply toners with a light touch, just a little bit of toner at a time. Remove toner with a pad until it no longer picks up a faint hue of yellow or gray.
Many adults who have acne also have enlarged pores, particularly if they have oily skin. A concentrated natural form vitamin C known as glycolic acid is a terrific way to smooth away enlarged pores. For smoother skin and smaller pores, the procedure is to first:
- Cleanse skin, rinse with warm water, and pat dry, then
- Apply toner lightly with clean fingertips, using at most two or three drops for the entire face, and then finally,
- Gently massage the skin until the toner is completely absorbed.
Adult acne sufferers also need treatments that take the redness out of pimples (usually by neutralizing red skin tones with green makeup and then covering up the green makeup with flesh tones), moisturizers, and sun protection. Moisture keeps pores open and free of acne. And don’t forget, everybody need skin protection 365 days a year.
