Top Five Homemade Acne Treatments
Pharmaceutical companies make lots of money from sale of over the counter and prescription medication for acne. These medications however, are not always effective, can come with undesirable side effects and can be considerably expensive. Around your home, however, there are many potential homemade acne treatments that are safe, usually effective, and always inexpensive. One of these five homemade acne treatments is almost certain to work for you.
Homemade Acne Treatments #1
Use water as a homemade acne treatment. Drink more fluids. It seems almost too simple to be true, but a Dutch research study found that simply drinking another half-cup (120 ml) of water a day helped most acne sufferers achieve softer, suppler skin. The suppleness of skin helps pores stay open. You don’t have to drink enormous quantities of water so that you go to the bathroom all day. Just find time to drink another cup of water or tea every day and you will see subtle, positive changes in your skin.
Homemade Acne Treatments #2
Use milk for a homemade facial. Got milk? Queen Cleopatra of Egypt was renowned for her beauty, which she maintained by taking daily baths in milk. Milk is the best natural source of lactic acid, which is a gentle face peel. Lactic acid lifts and separates tiny flakes of dead skin from the surface of the skin and keeps pores open. Open pores don’t accumulate whiteheads, blackheads, or pimples.
Wash your face with cleanser and warm water, and pat dry. Then apply a thin layer of whole milk over your face with your fingertips, just barely enough to cover the skin. Allow your skin to dry for 10 minutes. Then rinse with warm water and pat dry again. Be sure to use a clean towel so you do not return dirt and debris to your freshly rejuvenated skin.

Homemade Acne Treatments #3
Treat acne with tea. Green tea reduces the effects of testosterone on acne-prone skin. Testosterone stimulates the growth of skin cells lining the opening of pores so that they tend to trap oil and bacteria inside. Your skin benefits from green tea you drink, green tea you apply to your skin as a compress, or green tea catechins you take as a nutritional supplement.
To make a compress, first you need to brew tea. Green tea should not be brewed for more than three minutes, but rooibos tea should be brewed for at least 10 minutes. Dip a clean cloth into the tea and allow to rest on your face for 30 minutes. Then wash your face with cleanser and warm water. The tannins in tea will prevent oozing from inflamed pimples, and they will put the brakes on further infection.
Homemade Acne Treatments #4
Try the cucumber cure. Probably you have seen photos of women (or maybe even men) relaxing in spas with slices of cucumber resting on their eyelids. There is actually a scientific reason cucumbers are skin-healthy.
Cucumbers are a hypoallergenic source of alpha-hydroxy acids. These naturally occurring acids act as a humectant, increasing the water content of the skin and moisturizing the outer layer of the epidermis. This makes the skin softer and more flexible. Secondarily, alpha-hydroxy acids reduce skin cell adhesion and accelerate skin cell proliferation within the basal cell layers.
Alpha hydroxy acids encourage the growth of blood vessels to oxygenate the skin. They activate an internal clock inside skin cells at the surface reminding them of the time to die and be sloughed off, providing room for the growth of new, healthy skin. The growth of skin underneath the follicle forces it open and allows the release of dead skin cells and irritants.
To make your cucumber mask, wash and peel 2 or 3 cucumbers and then put them in a blender. Pulse 10 to 15 times until the cucumbers are finely minced, but not watery. Apply the fresh cucumber to acne-affected skin and cover with a towel. Lie down for 15 to 30 minutes to let the alpha-hydroxy acids do their work. Then remove the cucumbers and wash your face with warm water, patting dry with a clean towel.
Homemade Acne Treatments #5
Consider herbal treatments. Tea tree oil is superior to benzoyl peroxide for treating pimples with a yellow center, usually caused by infection with staph bacteria rather than the bacteria that usually cause acne. Apply tea tree oil creams to freshly cleansed, dry skin. When acne hurts, try calendula soaps. Calendula is anti-inflammatory and analgesic, and also anti-bacterial against the kinds of bacteria that usually infect pores.
