Three Rules You Need to Know
What you need to know about how to cure acne naturally is easy to learn, although some of the most important aspects of acne care are widely misunderstood. It’s never a good idea to dry out blemished skin, chocolate and nuts don’t cause acne, and the most expensive treatments for acne are seldom the best. To cure acne naturally, you need to understand the importance of natural remedies. Refrain from bleaches that may leave your skin glazed and spotted. All the bleaches in the market are made from synthetic chemicals which may be harmful to your skin. Here are three basic rules that tell you how to cure acne naturally with the details you need to know for best results.
How to Cure Acne Naturally #1
This is one of the most important rule on how to cure acne naturally. Keep your skin clean without drying it out. Although it runs against conventional wisdom, drying out skin makes acne worse. Dry skin is inflexible. Oil and bacteria get trapped in pores and whiteheads, blackheads, and pimples soon follow. Dry skin also flakes. Microscopic flakes of dead skin can block pores with the same result. You need to make sure that that you keep your skin clean without drying it out. Here’s how:

- Make a lather of your cleanser and apply to your face with your fingertips, not with a washcloth. Washcloths are reservoirs for grease, dirt, and acne-causing bacteria.
- Rinse your skin with warm water, not hot or cold. Hot water causes skin to flake and cold water tighten pores.
- Pat your skin dry with a clean towel. Never rub your skin dry.
- Avoid fragrances and essential oils. They smell great but they can cause allergic reactions and trigger the formation of whiteheads.
- Moisturize your skin on a regular basis. Oil and moisture are not the same thing. Even oily skin can become dry in dry weather or when it is exposed to harsh chemicals.
- Exfoliate your skin on a regular basis. Gentle skin peels with alpha- and beta-hydroxy acids keep the pores open by removing dead skin, and by stimulating the activity of the keratinocytes, cells that recycle the skin’s outermost protective layer.
- Avoid heavy makeup. If you use makeup, apply a thin layer with your fingertips evenly over the entire face. When possible, choose products that include sunscreen.
How to Cure Acne Naturally #2
Change your diet to reduce blemishes. Have you heard the old rumor that acne is caused by eating chocolate, drinking colas, or eating peanuts? Actually, these foods don’t cause acne (although they can aggravate cold sores). Many of the foods that aggravate acne are otherwise healthy. Here are some general rules for healthy diet on how to cure acne naturally:
- Don’t be afraid of healthy fat. Just be sure to eat the right kind. A recent study conducted in the Netherlands found that the fats in avocados, butter, cheese, chocolate, nuts, seeds, and whole milk yogurt actually protected the skin by keeping it flexible so pores remain open. The fat in margarine, corn oil, soybean oil, potato chips, and commercial baked goods, however, triggers the production of inflammatory hormones and keeps pores closed.
- Be careful with spinach and seafood, especially sea vegetables (dulse, nori, and seaweed). These foods are high in iodine, which can cause whiteheads to become inflamed.
- Avoid commercial baked goods, which contain bromides, chemically related to iodine. The bromides in commercially baked bread, cakes, cookies, doughnuts, pies, and rolls can trigger outbreaks.
- Eat tomatoes and tomato products in moderation. Lycopene, a chemical found in tomatoes, watermelon, guavas, and shrimp, increases the skin’s production of sebum.
- Don’t take large doses of vitamin C. This vitamin protects against viral infection, but it can also trigger production of sebum and dry out the skin.
- Avoid high-protein, low fat diets. Without a balance of the different kinds of essential fatty acids, high-protein diets cause as much sebum production as margarine.
It also helps to drink more water. A recent Dutch study found that drinking just one-half cup (120 ml) more water each day reduced symptoms of acne.

How to Cure Acne Naturally #3
Use natural medicines whenever possible. As a general rule, the more expensive an acne treatment is, the more likely it is not to work. Accutane, for instance, is nearly a miracle cure for cystic acne. It can open deep pores in a way that no other medication can. For mild-to-moderate acne, it can (and usually does) make blemishes worse for at least the first six weeks.
The most common over-the-counter medication for acne, benzoyl peroxide, kills acne bacteria and takes redness out of the skin. Unfortunately, it also dries out the skin, blocking new pores, so that the more you use, the more you need. Here are some natural remedies that are less expensive and that do not cause side effects:
- Calendula washes and soaps relieve the pain of inflamed pimples. They also kill the Propionibacterium acnes bacteria that accumulate inside pores. Be sure to test any calendula product on a small patch of skin before using it on your face, just to make sure you are not allergic.
- Tea tree oil, an Australian herbal remedy, kills Propionibacterium acnes bacteria just as effectively as benzoyl peroxide, but with less itching and inflammation. Tea tree oil also stops the staph infections that benzoyl peroxide does not.
- Honey is one of the oldest natural antiseptics for the skin. It contains antioxidant compounds that keep bacteria from forming colonies inside pores, and the royal jelly contains proteins that stop sunburn cells, reducing inflammation after sunburn, and activate keratinocytes, keeping excess skin from accumulating over pores.
