Severe Acne Treatment

Severe Acne Treatment in Six Simple Steps

Medically directed severe acne treatment usually involves the pharmaceutical heavy artillery of Accutane and Retin-A. These chemical concentrates of vitamin A can open deep pores that cannot be drained any other way short of surgery. The medications are dangerous and they inflame surrounding skin, but for many people they are the only way to begin severe acne treatment.

The important question in severe acne treatment after Accutane and Retina-A is, “What next?” Accutane and Retin-A stop severe acne, but they don’t prevent it from coming back. Getting rid of severe acne for good requires six simple -and much less expensive- steps.

Severe Acne Treatment Step #1

Be sure to get seven hours of sleep every night. What does sleep have to do with acne? During deep sleep, the body recycles the hormones that make the central nervous system sensitive to pain. Lower levels of pain hormones, in turn, keep skin from tensing around pores and blocking them once again.

Severe Acne Treatment Step #2

Wash your skin with warm water. Hot water can feel good on skin affected by severe acne. Unfortunately, hot water makes skin flake, and the flakes can block pores. Cold water traps oil and infection inside pores. Simply washing your skin with warm, not hold cold water, and limiting to hot showers to no more than 5 minutes, can go a long way toward keeping your skin acne-free.

Severe Acne Treatment Step #3

Pat your skin dry. Never rub your skin dry, and always use a clean towel. Rubbing the skin damages the delicate walls of skin pores. Dirty towels can reinfect the skin.

Severe Acne Treatment Step #4

Keep your skin moist. When skin is affected by severe acne, no amount of moisture reaches deep enough into the skin to do any good. Once severe acne has begun to clear, however, any kind of moisture helps keep pores open so that acne does not recur.

It’s not even necessary to buy a skin care product to moisturize the face. Running a vaporizer or humidifier is often enough to keep the skin moist. If you use a moisturizer, you want to avoid any products containing cholesterol, glycerin, or triglycerides, which can add too much oil back to the skin. And don’t forget to drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water every day.

Severe Acne Treatment Step #5

Stop new infections as soon as they start. Whenever you see a red pimple, treat it right away. You can use benzoyl peroxide creams and foams, but be forewarned that they perpetuate acne unless you exfoliate (step 6, below) your skin on a regular basis to keep the skin they dry out from blocking pores. A superior choice is tea tree oil cream, in any concentration from 5 to 15%. Tea tree oil takes a little longer than benzoyl peroxide to “get the red out,” but it does not dry out the skin, and it kills both the acne bacteria that benzoyl peroxide kills and the staph bacteria that it doesn’t. Especially if you see a new pimple with a yellow center, tea tree oil is usually a better choice.

Severe Acne Treatment Step #6

Exfoliate on a regular basis. Exfoliation is a (usually) gentle process of removing dead skin that blocks pores. When you use products containing alpha-hydroxy acids, exfoliation also stimulates circulation to the skin that provides nutrients, removes inflammatory chemicals, and fights infection.
